20 Things Learned from My 20 Years Working in Corporate America

on Tue, 04/12/2016 - 13:42

1.     Become known as a problem solver. Deliver the hard work, slacking will not get you anywhere. Replace, “I’ll do my best” with “I’ll take care of it” or “I’ll handle it” or “You can count on me”.  Make sure as many people as possible, in addition to your boss, knows you are a problem solver. Let those that might be your boss in the future know you are a problem solver.

2.     Moving sideways can help you climb the corporate ladder.  When it comes to hireability Breadth of knowledge, experience and skills trumps depth.

Business Visa’s 101

on Sat, 02/06/2016 - 23:34

There is an old saying, ‘Fool me once, shame on you.  Fool me twice, shame on me.’ When it comes to hiring and immigration law I wish I were only fooled once or twice but the truth is in my twenty plus years of staffing I’ve been fooled several times as to just who can be hired that is not a U.S. Citizen.

If you have been in the staffing business in one shape or form for any length of time you have had to deal with the visa issue.

The new-year for many is a time for searching for a new job. Whether you are laid off or ready to make a new change in your career a job search is on your list of new-year resolutions. Searching for a job is a job in and of itself. After putting all that work into preparing a resume, posting your resume, scouring the job boards and going on interviews there are a few things to keep in mind so as to not make all your efforts go up in smoke.  There are five things that you should never-ever do when searching for a job.

ONE: Go to an interview unprepared.

Do’s & Don’ts of Working in a Cube

on Wed, 12/23/2015 - 18:12

Ah, where would the American workforce be without the dreaded grey paneled, four-foot high cubicle. While many offices have re-embraced the open workspace where it’s every man (and woman) for himself as they grab a seat at a long table or sit in a lounge chair to hunker down to work, not to mention the growing phenomenon of working via a home space, still many employees report to work where they are relegated to working in a cube.

Strategic Interviewing for Staffing Millennials

on Sun, 09/20/2015 - 01:39

Watch out human resources and hiring managers, the Millennial job applicant is knocking on your door and don’t be surprised if their parent is doing the knocking for them.  Open the door to this job applicant born after 1980 and you will probably find a narcissistic, coddled, respectful, confident and broke candidate. You will also be greeting a diverse, creative, technical savvy candidate. By lottery of birth timing, Millennials are the world’s first generation of digital natives.  Adapting to technology is hard-wired in their DNA.

There’s no denying that a large portion of the Baby-Boomer

Attracting the Millennial Generation

on Tue, 09/15/2015 - 02:13

Much has been said lately about hiring the Millennial generation.  With all the hype, one would think that Millennials would soon be taking over the workforce and one would be correct!  The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that by 2016 Millennials will overtake the majority representation of the workforce and by 2030 this hyper-connected, tech savvy generation will make up 75% of the workforce.  H.R. leaders across the globe would be wise to strategize on how best to attract and capture the best and brightest of this generation.
